Description of English Language Learner Programs
We have approximately 1,700 English Language Learner's (ELLs) in our district. AESD offers ELLs three programs of instruction. The main goal of theses programs is to teach students the English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills necessary for success in the District’s educational programs. They include the following:
Accelerated Classes for English (A.C.E.)
For students at the lowest levels of English proficiency, an intensive English language and literacy development program is provided. It is known as the Accelerated Classes for English (A.C.E.). This program seeks to significantly accelerate ELLs English skills so that after one year they will be able to transfer to either of the other two District programs: Bridge or Mainstream. Specially trained teachers will assist students in their English language development, along with support from Instructional Assistants. Approximately 90 percent of the instruction in this program is conducted in English though students may receive some help in their primary language to better understand the English instruction.
Bridge
For ELLs at the intermediate, early advanced and advanced levels of English fluency the District offers the Bridge program. Students are clustered into certain designated classrooms. In these rooms which also include fluent English proficient (FEP) and English only student ELLs will be taught exclusively in English. Specially trained teachers will assist ELL students in their instruction.
Mainstream
Re-designated (R-FEP) students and English only students are placed in the Mainstream program which features grade appropriate course work and instruction completely in English.
Alternative Program
Students learn core subjects in primary language and learn English as a subject. Approved parent waiver required (Ed. Code 311).
Our goal is to provide the best learning environment possible for all children in our school district.
