Description of English Language Learner Programs

We have approximately 1,700 English Language Learner's (ELLs) in our district.  AESD offers ELLs three programs of instruction.  The main goal of these programs is to teach students the English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills necessary for success in the District’s educational programs. They include the following:

Structured English Immersion (S.E.I.)

For students at the beginning and early intermediate levels of English proficiency, an intensive English language and literacy development program is provided. It is known as the Structured English Immersion (S.E.I.). This program seeks to significantly accelerate ELLs English skills so that after one year they will be able to transfer to either of the other two District programs: Bridge or Mainstream. Specially trained teachers will assist students in their English language development, along with support from Instructional Assistants.  Approximately 90 percent of the instruction in this program is conducted in English though students may receive some help in their primary language to better understand the English instruction.

Mainstream English

For ELLs at the intermediate, early advanced and advanced levels of English fluency the District offers the Mainstream English program.  Students are clustered into certain designated classrooms. These rooms include re-designated fluent English proficient (RFEP) and English Only (EO) students.  Students in this program receive grade appropriate course work. ELLs are taught exclusively in English.  Specially trained teachers will assist English Language Learners in their instruction.

Alternative Program

Students learn core subjects in primary language and learn English as a subject. Approved parent waiver required (Ed. Code 311).

Our goal is to provide the best learning environment possible for all children in our school district.  Together we can help make a difference!
