Kid’s Cooking Contest
In March 2002 Student Chefs from each
of the Atwater Elementary Schools prepared Healthy
recipes at a
cooking competition. This competition was the centerpiece of a
Nutrition Fair at
Bellevue school in Atwater. A panel of School
Board members, Registered Dietitians, Chefs and
Community Members,
judged the student’s recipes in areas of simplicity and nutrition.
Students in the Atwater Schools
to help promote
National Nutrition Month submitted over 200 recipes.
The winning Student Chef then prepared their dish in the
cooking
competition later that month.

Students are being encouraged to try new fruits and vegetables during visits to the classroom at Bellevue school. In conjunction with the “Farm To School” program at Bellevue, Gwen Huff from California Association of Family Farms and Scott Hoyle, Sodexho Food Service General Manager, visit the class rooms and use the cafeteria for food tasting. Students are seeing and tasting fruits and vegetables that they have never tried before. Lesson plans, information about the items and hands on learning are used to expose students to healthy eating.
