Family Routines Can Make School Easier For Everyone

Three elementary school teachers wrote a new book. They wanted to tell   parents how to make school easier and more rewarding for everyone –   including parents!

One of their chief recommendations was having these family routines:

  • Create a morning routine
Follow a regular schedule for everything that your child needs to do—from getting up, eating and making the bed, to walking out the door.

  • Send your child off on a positive note.  Say, “Have a great day. I love you!”

  • Don’t interrupt school time.  Schedule doctor and other appointments during non-school hours.

  • Ask every day, “How did your day go?”  Ask specific questions about school.

  • Check your child’s school work daily.  Praise good work and review mistakes as well.

  • Set a consistent homework time.  Make sure this time is free of phone calls and TV.

  • Look through your child’s backpack every night.  Check for notes from the teacher.

  • Check your child’s assignment list every day.  Make sure your child is writing down all assignments.

  • Remind your child to take care of daily chores.

  • Set aside a time for your child to read.  A half hour before bed is often good.

  • Establish a bedtime for your child.  Stick to it—even in the spring when daylight lasts longer.

Reinforcing Learning

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Your Child’s Teacher Questions. Parents who   have good information are better equipped to help their children with the  learning process. As you completed your first parent-teacher conference this year, did you get the following questions answered?  If not, take a moment to talk to your child’s teacher.

·         What will the class be studying and learning this year?
·
What will my child’s daily schedule be like?
·
How much and what kind of homework will my child have?
·
How much time do you expect my child to spend on homework?
·
What kind of tests and feedback will you be giving?
·
What can I do to support my child’s learning at home?
·
How can I help at school?
·
Are there some materials you’d like to have in the classroom that I can contribute?
·
What’s the best way for me to communicate with you?
·
When and for what reasons do you want me to contact you?
·
When, how and for what reasons will you contact me?
·
What information about my child will help you understand and teach him better?
·
What tutoring or other help is available to my child, should s/he need it?
·
Are there parent support groups I should be aware of?

Here’s How to Learn About Your Child’s School

This year, you have decided to learn more about your child’s school. How do you go about it?  Educational researchers at Cornell University recommend seven methods for getting to know your child’s school better:

1.      Make an appointment to visit the school or class.
2.
Drop in to look around and talk with people (Notify the office first).
3.
Call or write the teacher or principal.
4.
Talk with other parents and children about their experiences.
5.
      Read school board minutes .
6.
      Read the school newsletter.
7.
Attend school events, especially open houses and PTA meetings.

The more of these methods you use, the better.  And remember—the better you know the school and teachers, the better job you can do as a
key part of your child’s education team.
