ARTICLE 11: WORK YEAR/HOURS OF EMPLOYMENT
11.1 Work Calendar:
The District work calendar shall contain 183 days per year. The work year shall
include 180 days of student instruction and three days of in-service. New
teachers to the District shall have 180 days of student instruction and five
days of in-service. The District, after conferring with AETA, shall have
discretion regarding the placement of these days within the work calendar.
11.2 Student Instructional Minutes:
Beginning with the 2008-09 school year, each full time teacher’s assigned
hours of student instructional time shall not exceed the following:
a. Kindergarten: 300 minutes per day – In addition the
first ten (10) days of kindergarten shall be half-day duration. With prior
AETA Executive
Board approval the ten (10) day requirement can be reduced or extended.
b. First – Third: 300 minutes per day
c. Fourth – Sixth: 325 minutes per day
d. Seventh – Eighth: 346 minutes per day
e. Community Day School: 360 minutes per day
11.3 Hours of Employment:
Beginning with the 2008-09 school year, each full time teacher’s assigned
hours of regularly scheduled daily employment shall not exceed the following.
Teachers shall report for regular assigned duties unless specifically excused.
All teachers are to report to their site of employment no later than thirty
(30) minutes before school begins.
a. Kindergarten: 385 minutes per day
b. First – Third: 385 minutes per day
c. Fourth – Sixth: 410 minutes per day
d. Seventh – Eighth: 425 minutes per day
e. Community Day School: 445 minutes per day

11.4 Reporting/Departing Time:
It is understood that teachers must be present and sufficiently prepared to
begin providing
educational services when the instructional day commences, as well as report
in a timely fashion for all other professional obligations/duties. Dismissal
of the day’s last class concludes the regular workday, notwithstanding
any remaining professional responsibilities.
11.5 Preparation Period:
7/8 teachers shall have one preparation period per day.
11.6 Lunch Period:
Lunch period will not be less than forty five (45) minutes and shall be duty
free except on those days when inclement weather (rainy day) necessitates
the adjustment of the teacher's lunch period time; then it shall not be reduced
to less than thirty (30) minutes and shall be duty free.
11.7 Professional Collaboration Days:
At school sites with Professional Collaboration Days (PC Days), the PC Day
shall be held on early student release days and shall not exceed 115 minutes
beyond student dismissal. With prior approval of the AETA Executive Board,
the 115 minute requirement may be extended. Teachers in attendance at PC
Days that do not have prior approval of the AETA Executive Board and exceed
115 minutes shall be compensated at the current hourly rate for each fraction
of an hour spent in attendance. The annual schedule for PC Days at each site
shall include six (6) teacher preparation days for work in the classrooms.
11.8 Yard Duty:
First through Sixth grade teachers shall be provided with duty free morning
recess during the mid-morning with the following exceptions:
a. One (1) teacher shall be on duty
b. Teachers shall stand yard duty if adequate playground supervisors are not
available.
c. Each principal shall prepare a teacher stand by yard duty schedule if “b” becomes
necessary. The schedule shall be shared with the standby teachers prior to
implementation of the schedule.

11.9 Night Duties:
Teachers shall not be assigned or required to attend more than two night duties
during the 183 day contracted school year (i.e.: Report Card Night; Back-to-School
Night; Open House).
11.10 Conferences:
The District Calendar will specify the dates on which teachers must be in attendance
for Parent-Teacher Conferences to discuss student progress, achievement,
and grades. If a teacher or a site administrator schedules a conference outside
of the regular Parent-Teacher Conference Days, it shall be held no later
than 15 minutes after student dismissal time when possible. When a conference
must be scheduled after 4:00 PM, teachers may request that an administrator
be present in the interest of safety. Teachers will request an administrator’s
presence with sufficient notice for the administrator to confirm and/or to
reschedule the conference to allow the administrator to attend.
11.11 Agreement:
It is understood that 11.2 (Student Instructional Minutes) and 11.3 (Hours
of Employment) shall be implemented beginning with school year 2008-09. Prior
to school year 2008-09 and in order to eliminate transportation issues 11.2
(Student Instructional Minutes) and 11.3 (Hours of Employment) will be opened
and discussed. If the district shows valid cause due to transportation issues
the times may be extended. With the exception of 11.2 (Student Instructional
Minutes) and 11.3 (Hours of Employment), the rest of this Article shall be
implemented beginning school year 2006-07.
