ARTICLE 14: JOB SHARING PROGRAM Revised June, 2003
14.1 Purpose:
In order to reach the goal of job satisfaction for its certificated employees,
the District is offering an alternative employment opportunity. The Job Sharing
Program permits two teachers to share one teaching assignment. Through this
program, educational needs of the District will be met while attending to employee
needs.
14.2 Definitions
"
Job Sharing" a plan whereby two permanent employees share the duties and
responsibilities for one full time teaching position.
"
Participants" the individual teachers involved in a job sharing team.
14.3 Limitations
14.3.1
Participants in the job sharing program will be limited to tenured K 8 certificated
staff, excluding management, subject to the approval of the Superintendent
and the Board of Trustees.
14.3.2
The number of shared assignments will not exceed two (2) per school site.
14.3.3
The Job Sharing Program does not preclude an employee from receiving a layoff
notice under California Education Code Section 44955.
14.4 Application
14.4.1
Interested teachers must make application, to be submitted by February 15 of
the year preceding the school year of desired participation. Applications
must meet the approval of the site administrator, Director, Personnel Services,
and the Superintendent prior to being submitted to the Board of Trustees.
14.4.2
Job sharing application forms will be available in the Personnel Office.

14.4.3
If a job sharing request is denied, the teacher may request the specific reasons
for the denial, in writing. This written communiqué will be received
by the teacher within ten (10) days of the date of the denial.
14.5 Responsibilities
14.5.1
Participants will be required to attend all preschool orientation meetings,
back to school nights, and open house. When using the semester option, the
back to school nights and open house will apply only to the semester the
participant is working.
14.5.2
Formal parent conferences (those scheduled twice a year) will be conducted
by both participants. Informal parent conferences will be conducted by either,
or both, participants as determined by need. When using the semester option,
parent conferencing will apply only to the semester the participant is working.
14.5.3
Faculty meetings, department meetings, and staff in-service days will be attended
by either or both participants as determined by the principal. When using
the semester option, meetings of this nature will apply only to the semester
the participant is working.
14.5.4
Non teaching duties and responsibilities are to be shared proportionally between
the two participants.
14.6 Salary
14.6.1
Participants will receive one half of the salary they would be entitled were
they employed full time.
14.6.2
Participants who work a full year in this program will receive one year of
credit toward salary schedule advancement.
14.6.3
Participants will receive appropriate unit credit toward salary placement for
course work completed and advanced degrees earned.

14.6.4
No matter which job sharing option is chosen, participants will receive their
pay at one half salary divided by 10 or 12 months, whichever payroll plan the
participant is under.
14.7 Employee Benefits
14.7.1
Job Share teachers may participate in one of the health plans offered by the
District at employee expense. For the purposes of the Job Sharing Program,
the provisions in the AETA/AESD Contract Article 14, Sections 14.2 through
14.3, the four (4) hour employment rule does not apply.
14.7.2
Workman's compensation insurance will be paid in accordance with existing laws.
14.7.3
STRS contributions will be based on the percentage of the assignment, determined
by State formula. One half year of service toward retirement will be credited
for each year in the job sharing program. This credit will apply toward the
Retirement Assistance Program (RAP).
14.7.4
Leave benefits (sick, bereavement, etc.) for participants will be pro rated
at the percentage that the participants' assignment relates to a full time
assignment as prescribed by Article 16. (AETA/AESD Agreement)
14.8 Duration
14.8.1
Job sharing assignments will be approved for one year only.
14.8.2
If a participant wishes to continue beyond the one year period, he/she must
make application again, following the procedures under Section 14.4
Reapplication will be approved only by mutual agreement of all the involved
parties.
14.9
Requests to Return to Full Time Employment
14.9.1
A job sharing participant will have the right to return to a full time teaching
position at the beginning of each year.

14.9.2
A participant who wishes to return to full time teaching must so notify the
District, in writing, no later than February 15 of the year preceding the
year of full time teaching.
14.9.3
At the end of the job sharing assignment, the participant with the highest
District seniority will have first choice at retaining the position. The
second participant retains all transfer rights accorded by Article XVII.

If the participant's previously held position is no longer available, then
the participant will be assigned a position in accordance with Article XVII.

14.10 Evaluation
14.10.1
Participants will be evaluated in accordance with Article 9. (AETA/AESD Agreement)
14.10.2
There will be an annual review on the effectiveness of the job sharing assignment
by the site administrator and the participants no later than April 1.
14.11 Substituting
14.11.1
When one participant of a job sharing team is absent due to illness or other
paid leave, the remaining participant of the team is encouraged to substitute
for the absent participant.
14.11.2
If a participant services as a substitute, five (5) days of substitute time
for each participant for the team will be approved at the participant's current
rate of pay. Absences in excess of five (5) days will require a substitute
or the partner may elect to teach at the regular rate of substitute pay.
14.12 Job Sharing Program
14.12.1
Job sharing participants will share time equally.

Suggested examples of shared time:
1. Segmenting of Day Mornings for Teacher A. Afternoons for Teacher B. (3.5 hours each) Prep periods at the junior high level will be mutually agreed by the participants and the principal.
2. Division of Days Teacher A: Monday, Tuesday, alternate Wednesday. Teacher B: Thursday, Friday, alternate Wednesday.
3. School Semester Teacher A: fall semester. Teacher B: spring semester (Each teacher will be required to work a total of 92.5 days).
14.12.3
Other plans for job sharing will also be considered.
14.12.4
Certificated staff, other than classroom teachers (music, resource, speech,
etc.) must make job sharing plans designed to meet the individual needs of
the position being shared
