State of the fiber project
State of Technology Staff Development
Technology Contest
Brad will share some of his projects
Other
Notes:
Attendees: Scott Skidmore, Brad Pickle, Scott Johnson, Mark Walker, Theresa Cayous, Sheryl Garman, David Ward
Fiber project: AT&T has reported that all construction is complete and they are waiting for the city to issue building permits prior to the commencement of construction.
Technology Staff Development: These sessions are ongoing every Monday afternoon. There have been an average of three to seven teachers in attendance at each session. A substitute presenter will be required for April 28th as David will be out of town. Theresa indicated she might be willing to volunteer.
Technology contest: This might focus on President's Day, the vernal equinox, leap day, or the San Joaquin Valley. Three divisions, K-3, 4-6, and 7-8. Prizes for the calssroom could include a digital camera, software such as Inspiration, a scanner, a digital picture frame, or even an iPod dock. A rubric will be developed. Judges could include Board members, DO Administrators, or City Council members. Information has been sent to Michele McCabe prior to implementation.
Projectors at TO are still unusable due to incomplete installation and missing parts. The architects have indicated they will purchase the necessary parts to make the situation right.
Brad shared some of the things he has begun doing now that he has gotten things going with the resources provided by the grant. He lets students check out the digital cameras to take pictures of team members. He incorporates those images into his presentations. The students pay better attention. He is narrating his presentations using Audacity. He is extracting charts, graphs, and images out of the textbook CD to use with his lessons. By using the technology students are asking how he does some of the effects - provides teachable moments. They are learning to use digital imaging technology to take pictures, upload, edit, and resize product.

CUE - evaluation
How do we go about pursuing the posting of common curriculum elements so each teacher doesn't have to do that on their own?
Readdress the issue of teachers purchasing personal laptops and requesting they be allowed to have them on the network.
Suggested dates and topics for drop in sessions for me to offer.
I’d love to share some of the Excel projects I’ve been developing and gather suggestions and inspirations for other projects.
Notes:
It was suggested that Math Facts in a Flash be purchased for all sites to assist with learning the math facts. It will save teacher's time correcting the Saxon timed tests.
Common curriculum elements appropriate for posting: Spelling Lists per grade level, technical term vocabulary lists, standards released questions in a game format.
It was decided that teachers will be allowed to have personal laptops on the network with the following stipulations:
The laptop must have up to date antivirus on it
Teachers guarantee that content inappropriate for a school district is, and will not be, on the laptop.
Teacher agrees that there will be no support provided for the laptop and that anything that happens to the laptop as a result of being on the district network is not the fault of the district.
It is understood that the personal laptops will not be a part of the AESD domain so access to network resources will be limited to Internet access or printing to an IP based printer if there is one in the room.
It was decided that from here on out, only IP based laser printers will be purchased for use in the district.
It was decided that regularly scheduled technology staff development needs to be offered. This staff development will be offered on the first and third Mondays of every month if school is in session. If other meetings are scheduled the staff development will still occur and if people wish to go to the staff development they are welcome to contact technology services for a repeat. Suggested topics: Moodle, Google Earth, Hot Potatoes, Basic Word, Audacity, Basic Web Pages, Basic e-mail, Basic PowerPoint, AR, AM, Basic Excel, Excel not for number crunching.
I shared the Excel projects I've been working on.
The fact that Fiber connectivity has been approved under e-rate for year 9 was shared with the committee.

CUE
PodCasting for the classroom
Yackpack
What are issues in the learning process and how could technology assist with success?
Other
Notes:
CUE arrangements were discussed.
Scott Johnson gave us a report regarding the podcasting he is doing for and with his students.
Scott also pointed out several free, educationally valuable podcasts he is using such as Grammar Girl.
Yackpack is a web site developed for the purpose of communicating by leaving verbal messages for one or many members of your pack.
Necessary staff development: computer basics, e-mail basics, developing a purpose/vision for class web pages.
It was pointed out that more support is necessary. It is the recommendation of the committee to push to get the two part time positions to be full time at a decent rate of pay.
It was also pointed out that a full-time ed-tech curriculum person would benefit the use of technology to assist with academic success.
A suggestion was made to develop, and post web pages with common elements such as spelling lists for student and parent access. What are the elements that are common and are there any volunteers to help with this endeavor?

3:00 PM
How are/may Data Projectors being utilized to support the curriculum and standards?
How are/may classroom web pages being utilized to support the curriculum and standards?
How can Moodle be utilized in a few computer classroom to support the curriculum and standards?
What should the standard classroom look like in terms of technology resources?
What is the vision of technology in the AESD?
What would we like to see in the next 5 years?
What do we expect students to be able to do with technology?
What are some ideas for staff development sessions this year?
Notes:
Uses of Data Projectors:
PowerPoint presentations of lessons
Use the PowerPoint Jeopardy Template as a review tool
Review sight words
Preview the stories by sharing pictures, use Google Earth to find the settings of stories, look up the author
Sentence lifting - critique writing
United Streaming / California Streaming
AR Class Quizzes - read a book as a class and then quiz as a class
A School Pad unit adds to the power of the data projector
Back to school night sharing with parents
Unit introductions that come with the Social Studies curriculum are great with a data projector
Students share research
Geography - Maps - Can't draw on a map on the wall, but you can diagram and illustrate on an electronic map.
View weather maps as a class and predict what the weather will be like at morning recess, lunch, dismissal...
Class story writing - Teacher puts up a starting sentence and each group needs to write a second sentence. Randomly pick a group to use their sentence. Then all groups need to write a successive sentence...
Use it to present OC word knowledge - start small and build.
Demonstrate software / computers and how to use them
Students are more engaged and teachers are better prepared.
The use of a data projector is dynamic and more efficient. Slides prepared ahead of time, don't have to turn back on the class or take the time to write on the board, don't have to erase the board, can save the presentation for later viewing by students, and can post it on-line.
Students learn through a screen at home...
Share student work.
A drawback is that the teacher's materials are electronic and not adorning the walls.
Classroom web pages:
Display student work.
Share what's being learned.
Provide access to materials.
Review concepts being taught.
Student portfolios to demonstrate success on standards.
Moodle in the few computer classroom:
Use the quiz feature to help students study their spelling words in the format of the State Standards test. Student's can take and retake the test until they get all words correct.
Wiki feature to have all students participate in creating an information base
Wiki feature to use for KWL
Forum to have students participate in on-line discussions on current curricular topics
Standard technology configuration in classrooms (minimum):
A dedicated teacher computer
1 computer to 5 student ratio leading to 4 student computers in K-3 and 6 student computers in 4-8
Adequate electrical power and plugs in the wall to support the technology
Electrical plug in the ceiling for data projector
Minimum of 10 network drops in diverse locations in each K-3 classroom and 12 network drops in each 4-8 classroom
1 Network based laser printer
1 data projector mounted in the ceiling
School Pad (preferred) or Wireless keyboard/mouse
80" projector screen
Powered speakers
VCR/DVD unit
50' VGA cable
50' S-Video cable

1:00 PM Old Business
Staff Development - Advanced PowerPoint, Skiddy's projects.
Copies of the Parental or non-employee/non-student use of computers which has been approved by Cabinet. Please let the staff at your sites know.
Haven't spent much time looking at Anti-spyware applications.
Standardized Screen Saver for Students
Huntington Staff personnel are using the room but not the computers at MSE.
We will have to continue the discussion regarding a Rules for Technology Use document at the next meeting. I believe we need to have something in place now that more students are being expected to utilize computers on a regular basis to learn and complete assignments necessary to be successful in school.
New Business:
Anne would like to share a website.
Headphones for student use - I have input from the nurses.
Other
Notes:
Reports were given on current staff development offerings.
Committee members were requested to share the Non-Employee / Non-Student Use of Computers form with their staffs.
Implementation of a standardized screen saver and settings was voted on and approved.
It was voted on and approved to use Heller's Rules for Technology Use document as the template for all sites to use to manage the ever expanding student use of technological resources throughout the district. Especially as the resources are providing access and interaction between sites.
Anne shared the CLRN web resources for Open Court. She is making links from the Library web pages.
I shared the input I received from the nurses regarding Headphone being used by multiple students.
The question was brought up regarding if there is any policy common throughout the district for students having cell phones, mp3 players, USB Keys / Thumb Drives. We will need to look into this next year.

Agenda/Notes
January 2006
1:00 PM Old Business:
- EETT Grant Implementation
- Renaissance Place
- Staff Development - Projector Class, EETT Grant Participants
New Business:
- Anne has a "Show and Tell"
- Parental or non-employee/non-student use of computers
- Would an anti-spyware solution be useful?
- Personal Blackberries
- Standardized Screen Saver for Students?
- Computer Use document like Heller's
- California Streaming
- 3:30 PM Webex for E-Sembler, the on-line grade book, parent portal, attendance taking application
Notes:
- All sites were represented
- Scott Skidmore reported on the EETT Grant implementation.
- Renaissance Place is in place, but is still having implementation issues learning how to work in the new environment.
- Staff Development suggestions: PowerPoint, Moodle, Acrobat, Basic introduction to computers
- Anne shared photostamps.com where valid stamps can be created from your own images.
- It was decided that a volunteer needs to sign a form outlining basic policies and that a staff person also needs to sign it verifying that the volunteer will be supervised when on district computers. Once the form is created and agreed upon this will be presented to Cabinet.
- We still believe substitutes should not use computers if they haven't gone through the e-mail policy session.
- I have contacted Mr. Ellis regarding the use of district computers by the Huntington personnel to ensure they understand the policies of the district and sign the proper documents.
- I will investigate an anti-spyware solution.
- It was decided that connecting privately owned Blackberries to the district Blackberry server is not an appropriate thing to do.
- I will bring back the idea of standardized screen savers for student logons to the next meeting.
- We will have to continue the discussion regarding a Rules for Technology Use document at the next meeting. I believe we need to have something in place now that more students are being expected to utilize computers on a regular basis to learn and complete assignments necessary to be successful in school.
- I have sent out the California Streaming passwords to the members of the technology committee. As they play with this resource and share it with the people at their sites passwords will be distributed further.
- It was suggested to think about the fact that companies are performing web searches to find things posted on the web by and about potential employees so that we should let students know they should be careful with sites like mySpace. The information people post on the web might follow them for life.
- Possible standardization policies for Moodle: 1. Picture is the default happy face or a real picture of the user. 2. Need to leave the description general and school related. (no grade, age, gender) 3. Moodle is an extension of the school which is open 24/7. All the school rules apply.

1:00 PM Old Business:
Standardized wall paper for students was implemented.
Filter Unblock Request Form has been developed and posted on the web site.
CTAP2 Success
Summer Technology Experience Report
New Business:
EETT Grant was Funded
Report on EETT implementation
Ren Place Implementation
Focus of this committee needs to be on technology as a teaching / learning tool.
Staff Development for the year
Teacher use of technology and Open Court inquiries, research
Notes
All sites were represented.
Concerns were brought up that the management of Renaissance Place might create strain on the limited man hours in the Technology Services office. It was noted that more technology support is needed as we keep adding hardware, software, and resources which need support.
Discussion regarding the focus of the committee and the need for staff development went on for quite a while. Teachers are uncomfortable with squeezing technology into an already tight schedule. It is our job to enable teachers to integrate technology and use it in the course of teaching. Teachers are using technology for the administrative functions they have been required to use. We need to provide support for teachers to use technology as a teaching tool and provide for students.
Possible Staff Development topics: The one computer classroom, training which which provides instruction to make resources which can be used immediately in the classroom, Moodle.
Mentor one person at each site. But it has to be for a purpose.
Suggested that the Board Agenda on-line.
CUE is on March 10.
I will send the information regarding the Data Projector Staff Development offer to each representative.

9:00 Old Business
Service Request Database - Location and Use
Emergency Procedures Handbook - I have not made progress on this (still). What information needs to be included?
Web Filter. I have successfully configured the filter to have alternative times. It opens up after hours and on weekends as requested at the last meeting.
- Personal laptops on the network. We tabled this at the last meeting. Items of concern:
- Proof of Antivirus
Responsibility of virus infection if caused by the individual.
What liability would the district have if issues arose on the individual's laptop as a result of being connected?
What of inappropriate files brought in behind the firewall?
What about the tech administrators having full access to the hard drive and files?
Method of keeping track of how student internet use forms are recorded and how staff knows which students have them on file? Should all schools keep track in SASI? How frequently should the forms be required? Currently, they are required annually.
Standardized wall paper for student logins?
I have requested the Field Trip Permission Form be translated into Spanish and Hmong for posting on the web page.
New Business:
Revisit Minimum Standards for PC, Printers, Donated Equipment.
Revisit Tech Plan...
Changes going on at Bellevue.
Ren Learn Products losing data path.
Internet Filter Request Unblock Form.
California School Technology Survey Information needed.
CUE
Other
Lunch...
Notes:
I will build "Change Status" pages for the technology work request database so each site technology person can record and mark as completed work done.
The issue of allowing staff personal laptops on the network was discussed again. We continue to have concerns. A motion was made to approve allowing staff personal laptops on the network which was voted down with a 4 to 6 vote. This issue can be revisited in future years.
All committee members are in favor of all sites tracking student Internet use forms in SASI and the paper forms should remain in the office.
Brad volunteered to have us experiment standardizing wallpaper through AD based on login with the lab student login.
Minimum standards for the purchase of PCs, laptops, and printers were not modified at this time. However, modifications to standards for donated computers did happen in regards to machines donated by staff for use in their own classrooms. Many machines 1. We will not upgrade the machine. 2. File recovery from the machine prior to formatting is the responsibility of the donator. 3. Minimum of 128 meg of RAM. 4. Frequently machines are upgraded in the home when they start experiencing issues. People upgrade and then decide to donate the old machine to the school district. Because of this we are implementing a three strikes rule for donated computers. After three service calls they are removed from service.
Scott, Scott, Patty, and Mark volunteered to review the technology plan with me.
We had quite a discussion about Mimeo devices. I shared what Mike Arnold is doing with the one he has in his classroom.
I will develop a Internet Filter Unblock Request form, seek input from the tech committee, and pursue Cabinet approval.
I have sent out an e-mail to the technology committee members requesting information to assist me in filling out the California School Technology Surveys.
CUE: Brad has done an excellent job arranging rooms. I will get us registered once I have the necessary number of forms to get the discount. I have sent a query to Ron about buy-back money for that day and he replied he would check with the auditors.
Other items:
The Williams lawsuit was explained and the need to publish links on all district web sites.
I am trying to determine who is responsible for the design of the pink emergency card to see about getting a field for a parent contact e-mail address.
I have now added a Requisition Form with no shipping or tax calculations if you know those amounts.
Brad will send me the new Insurance Claim Form for posting.
We spent a good deal of time looking at Moodle. We have a test system up and running. I have made accounts for the tech people who expressed an interest so they can experiment and poke around.
Ed Tech Meeting Agenda/Notes
October 2004
1:15 Old Business
Any issues with the tech support side of AR, etc..?
Printer Cartridge Recycling. Please let people at the sites know to save their printer cartridges for recycling. I can also recycle cell phones.
Service Request Database - location and use.
Emergency Procedures Handbook: I have not made progress on this. What information needs to be included?
E-Rate projects
Web Filtering is not being done at MCOE anymore. We are doing it in-house with Lightspeed. Any issues?
Can we review the acceptable use contract and maybe add a place for an email address? I forgot to do this for this year. I modified the English version on 10-5-04.
Tech Assistants are back for the year.
2:00 New Business
Issue: People bringing in machines from home to put on the network. Now I've received requests from people who have purchased new laptops for their own use. They aren't willing to donate them. Are we able to accommodate their use on the network?
I believe we should standardize the method of keeping track of how student internet use forms are recorded and how staff knows which students have permission and which students don't. Do you know which students in your class haven't turned in a, signed Internet Use Agreement?
Would we like to standardize wallpaper for student logins on Win2K and WinXP machines?
Confidentiality notices on e-mail.
Phasing out Windows 95.
Staff Development: I am offering a class beginning November 11, 2004, pending Fresno Pacific approval.
Other
Notes:
Suggestions for Emergency Procedures Handbook: Include the Technology Services phone number.
Possible e-rate projects suggested:
Switches for IDFs in classrooms
Video Conferencing systems
A request was made to figure out how to have alternative filtering packages depending on hours of the day.
After much discussion regarding allowing personal laptops of teachers on the network we were not able to come to consensus. We have tabled this issue to allow committee members time to think it through. Some concerns are: 1. Current Antivirus and how to ensure it is being kept up to date. 2. What about inappropriate files which may be on the laptop which could then be introduced to machines on the network. 3. If a virus is introduced to the laptop from the network, who is responsible for fixing things up? 4. If a virus is introduced to the network from the laptop to what extent would the laptop owner be responsible? 5. What about the files and settings install automatically on machines connected to the domain?
Standardizing the method of keeping track of the Internet Use Agreements was discussed. At two sites it is being notated in SASI and at another site it is being monitored by the librarian. No means of centralized tracking is in use at the other 5 sites - each teacher keeps track for their own class.
Committee members are considering the pros and cons of standardizing the wallpaper for machines logged in under a student log in.
The committee decided that confidentiality notices on e-mails are not a good thing at this time. Reasons being: 1. Board Policy states that no confidential material be transmitted via e-mail. 2. The language in many confidentiality statements does not represent the school district in a positive, friendly manner. 3. It is not necessary on every e-mail so it shouldn't be included on every e-mail by default. 4. Isn't this a means of trying to cover mistakes by the sender by placing the burden upon the recipient?
The proposal of phasing out Windows 95 brought cries of anguish from several committee members. After discussion it was decided that if a Windows 95 machine is to experience serious issues it will not be repaired and that we will still have a goal of removing them from the network by June of 2005.
We have a new server beginning to handle the updating of virus def files and the antivirus program itself.
Translations of the Field Trip Permission form have been requested for posting on the web.
Visit Planetcdrom.com for deals on educational software.

AR Management: Students, along with data, can easily be transferred from school to school. How to get this done depends on the site and the personnel managing the program. To request a student the following information needs to be included: Student Name, Student ID Number, School Left, School Entering, Grade. We will be aiming to take care of all Ren Learn graduations and setups for next year during the last week of school.
Staff Development Steering Committee: Purpose is to assist in determination of staff development needs, design integration of technology into curriculum, determine best means of providing staff development. Volunteers are: Anne, Patty, Scott, Scott, Mark, and David. First meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 12, 2004. We have been meeting every other week and developing OCR related teaching tools to be used as hooks to interest staff in staff development to be offered next year. We will also be developing student projects to be used in the classroom. This group will be attending NECC this summer to further our efforts in this area.
Printer Cartridge Recycling: I have signed up the district to participate in a cartridge recycling program. Please let staff know to collect and send to my office all ink and toner cartridges. This program also allows us to collect and recycle old cell phones.
Service Request Database. This project has been up and running since mid-February. It is time to share with everyone on the tech committee how to connect to and use the database.
Emergency Procedures Handbook: I have not made progress on this. What information needs to be included?
Review of process for legal disposal of discarded monitors and computers.
Subs using passwords and students using passwords with subs in the room.

Web Filtering change
Hyperscore
The status of Posting of student grades etc on the net?
The status of Blackboard?
The status of parent connect?
Can we review the acceptable use contract and maybe add a place for an email address?
Examples of photo release forms
The status of the MSE grant?
Equipment needs for next year?
The status of the tech helpers – are they coming back next year?
Are there any plans on adding a full time person in your office?
Notes:
Suggestions for inclusion in an Emergency Handbook include:
What to do when the power goes off.
What to do when a virus hits the district.
A suggestion was made to look into creating a login profile which would prohibit access to the Internet.
CTAP2 was discussed and the management webpage was shared. Some teachers thought the e-mail with the link to the survey's was a virus. I'll be checking next week and sending a reminder. The following week I'll be pinpointing teachers to remind them directly.
E-rate. Funding went down to the 70% level this year. All sites will have fiber backbones and all but two sites will have siwtched gigabit backbones.
Web Filtering will only be Lightspeed next year.
Hyperscore is a "visual" music creation program which may be interesting to allow students to create music and see it.
Student grades are not to be posted on the Internet. ParentConnect and Integrade Pro, modules of SASIxp, are being considered for a pilot at MSE next year if teachers buy into the project.
Blackboard is available for use. Interested teachers should contact Technology Services and will need to provide electronic class lists laid out in a specific format.
Instead of collecting e-mail addresses of parents on the Acceptable Use Contract it was suggested that there should be a place for them on the emergency card. Parents should also be asked whether e-mail is an acceptable means of contact as some may not check it frequently or it may be a work address.
The photo release form is similar to the form already established for permission to post name, work, or likeness on the web. It was suggested that if student likenesses are going to be posted in the community that a specific release also be obtained.
The consensus of the group was that there is a need to maintain the current level of technology services staffing and that a third full-time position should be seriously considered and pursued in light of the 9th school in the district, increased number of computers, increased number of software applications, and increased use overall.

Discussion regarding technology and summer school took place. I will inquire with the summer school Principals to find out if they are planning on using AR. If yes, a summer school installation should occur. Tech support needs to be arranged. A generic summer school student login needs to be created. Staff should use web e-mail.
Securing passwords was discussed. Staff needs to be educated to not share passwords nor leave their passwords for subs. They also need to be reminded that all adult users of computers connected to the network must have sat through the session and signed off on the paperwork. Student users need to have the proper forms on file. The consensus of the tech committee is that computers should not be used when substitutes are in the room. Long term subs can get a password
AR Management: Students, along with data, can easily be transferred from school to school. How to get this done depends on the site and the personnel managing the program. To request a student the following information needs to be included: Student Name, Student ID Number, School Left, School Entering, Grade.

Technology and Students with Special needs: MCOE has excellent resources.
Printer Cartridge Recycling: I'll be getting information. People at the sites should set up a bin and start collecting them.
Ed Tech Meeting Notes
September 2003
All sites are up to AR 6.3 and STAR 2.3 we need to stay standardized. When an update comes out one site will be updated. A couple of weeks later, when things have proven to be stable, the other sites will be updated.
Minimum Standards for computers were reviewed and updated.
Discussion on the topic of what to do about machines being moved from one person to another or from a staff member to a student. Tentatively it was decided that:
Teacher to teacher transfers should be the responsibility of the teacher to delete files.
Office machines should be handled by Tech Services personnel.
If Staff leaves the district or the site the machine should be reformatted.
Machines going from a staff position to a student position should be reformatted.
The question of staff using other machines for summer school was not resolved.
A service request database was shared.
The option to request OS licenses from Microsoft to cover older donated machines was discussed. Tech Services personnel will pursue.

Accelerated Reader:
TO: Seven teachers are using it.
PH: Five or Six teachers have made "model classroom" status
Scott Johnson is willing to be a trainer in the district
It isn't reading curriculum - it is a supplementary program
Shouldn't restrict what books students choose to read
One person must be in charge of maintaining it for it to function smoothly. When too many people are administering it there are problems.
I haven't done anything about AOL IM or the Emergency Procedures Handbook
I am still looking at Active Directory implementation. (I am requesting pricing to upgrade the server. I may use some grant money for training in the implementation, configuration, and use of AD).
It is the vote of the committee to block free web-based e-mail sites. I have sent an inquiry to MCOE to enable this blocking.
I have heard back from the six principals where the 5 minute technology sessions are scheduled. They are happening at 4 sites. Mostly positive comments from the principals. Not started at 2 sites. Hopefully, the e-mail inquiry will get the sessions underway.
Discussion was started about what to do regarding the disposal of broken computer equipment. No decisions were made. A location for storing broken parts will need to be found - can't haul off one piece at a time. A possible $10.00 surcharge per machine purchased or donated was discussed - build up a fund to be used to pay the fee to dispose of old hardware. Anne is having Tony check into the monitor recycling facility at the prison.
There are still problems with the wireless. I'm ordering a power meter which should help to align the antennas. We'll probably move the radio unit to the roof at Colburn. Perhaps purchase better coaxial cable.
To use voting buttons in Outlook:
Open a new message
Click on the Options button in the new message (NOT the options in the Tools menu)
Check the Use Voting Buttons box
Enter the choices in the text box. Separate choices with a semi-colon.
CUE is May 15 - 16. Brad will be on his own to decide if he will go or not. I have not heard back from Mike. All others expressed an interest to go. Some may go for Thursday sessions. Those interested in the Thursday sessions will have to arrange for their own subs. Sites will use AB1339 money to pay for hotel, meals, and registration.
Thanks to Anne for sharing the Wild West Web site she put together.
The next meeting is scheduled for April 14, 2003. There will be an introduction to Linux session from 8:30 A.M. until 11:30 A.M. for anyone on the committee who is interested.

Thank you to those who shared how technology is being used on your sites. Following is a synopsis of what was shared:
TO: Bulletins will be e-mail to staff starting in January. Staff and students are using word processing more often. Accelerated Reader is being implemented as a supplementary reading piece.
EW: One teacher is taking 3 questions from the OCR question/answer board and having students research the answers on the Internet. This is helping the students have an interest in generating questions in relation to OCR so they can use the computer to answer them.
AC: Daily bulletin is e-mailed, communication with the office is mainly via e-mail cutting down on the number of phone calls disrupting the class.
MSE: A mini-inservice was provided on using tables in Word. About 10 teachers attended.
Sha: Technology is being used.
E-Rate year 5 we have been partially funded and are waiting to hear about the 80% schools. E-Rate year 6 is currently out to bid.
Proxy Server was turn off at the end of November.
AOL IM is still being used by several people throughout the district. Committee members have expressed concerns about this as a possible safety risk.
A requisition for the Lightspeed E-mail content filter/Websense Internet filter was presented to the Superintendent on Monday, December 9, 2002. She will discuss with the business manager how to fund this purchase.
Heartsoft software evaluation binder will go to Patty. She'll let us know what her students think of it.
Antivirus update: Most machines have the new software. It appears to be updating regularly and catching viruses. Technology Services personnel will be focusing on securing all shares throughout the district in the coming weeks. Scott Skidmore suggested that all Win9X shares should have a simple password on them to keep viruses from replicating as far.
Donated equipment minimum standards:
Must have the OS and include the license
Must be working
PII or betterI'll be working on an Emergency Procedures and communication handbook. When I get it started I'll be looking for suggestions and critiques.
Passwords should not be shared. If a long term sub will be in a classroom the sub needs to access the system under their own password. Long term subs, as defined for the purpose of getting a password, will be on board for 2 or more weeks.
I've sent out e-mails to folks regarding the building and maintaining of site web pages. I'm trying to nail down the list of the folks willing to take this on and then will set up a regular monthly schedule to work on this project.
Next Meeting Topics:
Report back on the status of items on the Technology Services "wish list"
Report on progress on Active Directory
Report on Patchlink abilities to track software installed on machines
Develop a letter to all staff reminding of the right by district personnel to review all e-mail and places visited on the web
AB1339 Staff Development Presentation updates

Technology Plan has been approved by the State. There are two more sections that need to be written in order to pursue a grant this year.
Minimum Specs for Desktop PCs were updated on the web.
Laptop Specs were added.
The form for permission to post student name, likeness, and work was revised so that only one Yes/No response along with signatures will complete the form. This is for easier tracking of permission.
It was voted upon and approved to block AOL Instant Messenger with Cabinet approval.
The Proxy Server will be turned off at the beginning of November.
The wireless network has been upgraded and seems to be running well.
It was voted upon and approved to obtain and implement hardware/software to begin filtering the content of e-mail in an effort to block spam and inappropriate e-mail. At the same time the committee strongly recommends obtaining the hardware and software to filter the Internet in house.
E-rate projects for this year:
Servers for all sites
Switches for Wood, MSE, Shaffer, and Olaeta
Servers for Union Catalog Project
Telco services
Fiber at Wood, MSE, Shaffer, and Olaeta
It is imperative that people log off their machines each night. The anti-virus update occurs upon logging into the machine.

January 19, 2001
How is technology being used at your site?
Sha: One classroom is doing a lot. Students have regular access to practice skills and following directions. Some other teachers are looking for resources to use at home to benefit the students. Data Works noticed a lack of technology in the school.
EW: A majority of teachers are using the Reading Counts program. E-mail use is increasing because teachers are asking questions about Outlook. Data works found that technology is an area that needs work. Several teachers have indicated in goal setting sessions that they are choosing to work on improving their technology skills.
MK-6: Everyone is using e-mail. The iMacs from the lab are starting to find their way into the classrooms. Accelerated Reader is going strong although most testing is happening in the lab.
MSE: The spotlight on Mitchell Board meeting went well. Six new computers have been ordered to update the machines in the library. The old machines will go to classrooms for research/Accelerated Reader machines.
AC: A group of students will be recruited to assist in development of a school web page.
No new changes were suggested for the guidelines for listserve use, classroom web pages, or posting of lessons on district resources. They will be submitted to Cabinet in the next week or so.
I have made a contact in regards to the training session hopefully scheduled for March 26. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks, Scott, for sharing the Mimio with us.
The May 10 meeting date has been changed to May 18. This will avoid the Sat9 testing window and enable the group to travel to CUE. I have requested the car and the van. Brad is looking into places to stay.
The next meeting in scheduled for February 21, 2001.

Ed Tech Meeting Notes
December 6, 2000
How is technology expanding at your site:
AC: The morning was spent learning what technology is at the school. There is no active technology committee at the site. Perhaps a place to start is to form a technology committee.
Bell: Progress is being made getting STAR up and running. The principal gave the OK to pursue purchasing a number of new computers to update the older equipment on site.
EW: A data projector is being ordered. People are contacting the site technology person for help with equipment and software (people are trying to use the technology).
MK6: Slowly upgrading to Imacs in the classrooms. Planning on purchasing more Imacs in the spring.
MSE: Looking at purchasing/leasing of more laptops. New software was seen and picked up at CUE. Moving to Windows 2000 for the office machines.
PH: Purchased a router in the fall. Replaced hubs with switches at all IDFs. The network is much more efficient. People are updating software on their own according to directions and it is working! ClassroomXP component of SASI is being used in all classrooms for attendance.
Sha: No representative was present.
TO: People must be using the Internet as it is reported that they do not like the filter.
MCOE Presentation:
Visit http://media.merced.k12.ca.us to view the county's IMC collection and order materials. The PowerPoint instruction presentation for Media Net is now at http://www.merced.k12.ca.us/instruct/
Remember to have people enter their e-mail address into the medianet feature in the profile page so that when materials are ordered confirmation can be sent out automatically.
Check out http://www.wcom.com/marcopolo for standards based content.
Check out http://www.c-smart.org for cost-effective hardware and software.
Proposed guidelines for classroom web pages:
Use common sense
Keep it related to school/classroom business
E-mail address of the person maintaining the page and when it was last updated should be posted
All appropriate forms must be on-hand before posting a student's name, work, or image
Teacher is responsible for checking links on a regular basis
Links should be student friendly and appropriate
Proposed guidelines for posting lessons
AESD doesn't assume liability for lessons posted
District is granted the rights to posted lessons to utilize by AESD staff in perpetuity
Other AESD staff can use and modify the lessons
Lessons posted on the web must have authorship listed
District can't guarantee against violation of copyright
Make sure you aren't posting copyrighted material
Proposed guidelines for using listserves
Don't post things you wouldn't say to your mother or the principal
Confidentiality is a must - don't name students or other people
A listserve moderator is necessary
Respect others
No student access at school
Parent permission is required for students to join
Controlled membership
Stick to the topic
Use appropriate language
The new meeting time met with approval. We will continue to work at the sites in the morning and meet after lunch. Our next meeting is on January 19, 2000.

October 25, 2000
Everybody, thanks for sharing about issues at your school sites.
We will continue to clarify the appropriate ways for staff to obtain assistance with technology issues/problems. The agreed upon method is: 1. Staff member contacts the site tech coordinator 2. The site coordinator takes care of the issue if possible. 3. The site coordinator contacts my office if assistance is necessary. 4. E-mail is the preferred method of contact.
SASI has several issues. We are doing our best to resolve the issues as they arise.
The Unison upgrade to the Windows version went well at Heller. It is working well. Upgrading will occur at other sites over the next several months.
The Filter
I still do not have local control. It will happen. Please be patient.
I am still under the same filtering rules as everyone else.
www.cdwg.com is not filtered. (The "g" makes a difference)
Guidelines for using listserves, classroom WebPages, and posting of lessons on district resources are in process. We will address these issues further at our next meeting.
When working on site or class web pages remember we need to keep people with disabilities in mind. Make text easy to read, remember "Alt" tags to explain images, limit animated gifs and watch the clutter.
I hope you got something out of the report on the Aligning Curriculum conference. It caused me to think in different ways and to look at certain issues from different viewpoints.
The syntax to use on Altavista for learning what sites contain a link to a page is link: www.aesd.k12.ca.us (or any other address you choose to use). It didn't work this morning because I capitalized the "l" on the word link. Anyway, this tool can assist in determining the value of information on a web site. Look who values the information enough to have a link to the page.
We looked at and discussed wwwrrr. I will report our comments to the sales rep when he calls me again.
In case you haven't noticed, I've set up the AESDTech listserve. Please post comments, questions, and ideas for all to read, learn from, and respond to. This should enhance our ability to work cooperatively as a district committee.
Next time we will revisit the guidelines we started, e-rate, have a report on Comdex, and share how technology is expanding at each site. If you have other things to include, let me know...

E-rate projects to pursue:
Ray and I will work on the implementing the second access point once the County contract is established so the router can be configured.
The technology survey results were interesting. After looking at the results, I'm not sure what staff development opportunities I should offer. Do you hear of, or see, staff development needs at your site? Please let me know.
Fall CUE. I still don't have any brochures.
Minimum standards have been updated on the Information page of the technology web site.
Here are the policies regarding 486 machines I believe we agreed to:
- 486 machines will no longer be placed on the network.
- 486 machines currently on the network are fine to remain on the network.
- Limited support will be provided for 486 machines.
- Money will not be spent to repair or upgrade 486 machines.
- If a repair to a 486 machine is judged to take more than one hour of time the repair will not take place and the machine will be stripped of useable parts and discarded.
Thank you, Scott, for sharing e-groups with us. At our next meeting we will discuss guidelines for the use of e-groups and similar sites/applications with students.
The report on the Aligning Curriculum conference was postponed until next month.
Other: Currently I would prefer if all computer system purchases funnel through my office. The current vendor (who is doing a fine job) is Tangent from Burlingame, CA. For parts and other small stuff we are currently focusing on CDW-G in Illinois.
Next time we will discuss:
- The filter
- Guidelines for using e-groups and similar sites/applications
- Guidelines for classroom web pages
- Access of web pages by handicapped individuals (Bobby web site)
- Guidelines for posting lessons on district servers (who owns them?)
- Scott will share digital portfolios
