Kindergarten
1st Trimester


Students will begin concept formation as a class through brainstorming and modeling.

Students will draw illustrations, individually, to begin to express knowledge of a concept.

Students will be assessed through pre-formatted worksheets and informal assessment during instruction time.

First grade
1st Trimester


Students will be able to write a simple sentence with some use of capitalization and punctuation.

Write a Sentence About format found in Primary Steps Reproducible, page 21. We will give the students a picture and have them write a sentence about it.

Second grade
1st Trimester


Students will write a narrative based on experience moving through a logical sequence of events using appropriate transition words and phrases.

2nd Trimester

Students will continue to participate in teacher directed organization of concepts.

Students will use the terms “First, Second, Third” with teacher modeling to organize ideas.

Students will be assessed through pre-formatted worksheets and informal assessment during instruction time.

2nd Trimester

Students will be able to identify and put into order sentences that are given to them on green and yellow strips.

Framed Paragraph found in Primary Steps Reproducible on pages 71-74. We will use various themes from our Open Court units.
We will give the students preprinted yellow and green strips for them to put into order. They will then glue them onto another paper to demonstrate the understanding of main idea sentences and detail sentences.

2nd Trimester

Students will write a friendly letter complete with date, salutation, body, closing, and signature.

Expository writing using a topic sentence, transition words, details, and conclusions.

3rd Trimester

*Students will begin to explore topics individually using the format of “First, Second, Third.”

*Students will identify green and yellow portions of a paragraph done as a class.

*Students will begin to color code sentences or ideas using green and yellow after teacher modeling.

*Students will begin writing simple sentences and illustrating their ideas.

*Students will be assessed through pre-formatted worksheets, informal assessment during instruction time and through individual work.

3rd Trimester

Students will be able to write a simple paragraph containing a main idea (topic) sentence and at least three detail sentences with transition words.


Students will practice writing paragraphs using Step Up to Writing frames. We will use themes from Open Court units as topics for writing. We will use a blank frame to assess. A specific topic sentence will be given to the students and they will generate detail sentences on their own. For example: Let me tell you the colors that I like.

3rd Trimester

Students will be able to write a descriptive paragraph using good details.
